What Is Repentance?

What Is Repentance?
In one of the parables of Jesus Christ, he approved of the man who in Luke 18:13 said to God: “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

Genuine repentance pleads with the Lord to forgive your sins, reconcile you to God the Father, and save you from going to hell fire. Acts 3:19 states: Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.

Repentance is not just about being afraid to go to hell, but more about recognizing that you have sinned against God and you need to change. In repentance, there is regret of past ungodly actions. In repentance, there is also willingness and readiness to stop the sinful way of life, and to start a new life by the power of God’s grace.

Repentance is not a mental thing only. There is oral confession in repentance, whereby you have to ask God in spoken words to forgive your sins, save you, help you, and empower you for a different kind of life – the righteous life. Romans 10:10 states: For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. So the sinner needs to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. If possible, remember specific sins and confess them to God and tell him how sorry you are for them.

How Does Forgiveness of Sin Happen?
According to the Bible in Hebrews 9:22, “without shedding of blood [there] is no remission” of sins. This is referring to the blood of Jesus Christ which he shed on the cross on Calvary Hill. That holy blood is the only thing the Bible says that can wash away human sin. That blood was shed specifically for the forgiveness and remission of sins. The good news is that the blood was shed for sinners like us. So, go ahead and ask God for forgiveness and remission of your sin by the blood of Jesus [Yeshua] Christ. If God sees in your heart that you have genuine repentance, he will forgive you as he has always done for people.
